A Book of Poems, Drawings & Paintings
Inspired by the Great South Bay
Contact: Pete Vanderberg
For Immediate Release
The Amityville Artists Circle is pleased to present Weather-Eye, a collaboration of new work by Brooklyn artist James Vanderberg and Long Island poet Peter Vanderberg. The exhibition will run from Thursday 8/16 - Sunday 8/19. Opening reception Friday, August 17th from 7 - 9pm at the Circle Gallery in Amityville, NY.
The exhibition presents drawings, paintings and poems inspired by the coasts and waters of Long Island, where the Vanderberg’s grew up. James's semi-abstract drawings and paintings allude to bay reeds, red skies, oyster shells and refracted summer sun through water. His series of knot drawings explore the context of a line both physical and drawn. Peter’s poems engage the same physical environment while also giving voice to the metaphysical currents at play there. Many of the works by the brothers were mutually inspired. Poems give voice to paintings; paintings illuminate poems and a multi-dimensional portrait of the Great South Bay is offered.
This collaborative project, which began over two years ago, has been assembled into a book and published with funds raised through kickstater.com, which allows people to give donations to creative projects and ideas. Both brothers plan to bring their work to galleries, bookstores and cafes from Greenpoint, Brooklyn to Greenport, Long Island. The upcoming exhibition at The Circle Gallery in Amityville will include a reading of poems from the book given by Peter Vanderberg and a conversation about the project with both Vanderberg brothers.
